How To Lose Weight While Breastfeeding

There are plenty of articles out there on how to lose weight while breastfeeding. But, they’re usually going to try to sell you a product that you don’t have time to use. There isn’t a one and done product to make it fall off, but a combination of things to do around the house that will help you drop the baby weight and get back to feeling like yourself.

Before getting pregnant I averaged around 128 pounds. The day I went into labor I was 188 pounds. -Yikes! My OBGYN liked to remind me that I was over the average weight gain every visit.

I always heard moms complain because they never got back down to their pre-pregnancy weight. Hoping that wasn’t going to be the case with me, I was determined to get back into my favorite pair of jeans.

Now through my pregnancy, I tried to eat healthily. Keyword tried. I think every pregnant woman tries and eventually says forget it and eats what their body tells them to. If that was not you and you ate healthy your entire pregnancy you deserve an award. A big fat trophy. Seriously.

I read that the average weight gain with a pregnancy is 25 to 35 pounds. When I started gaining more than the average I started getting nervous, but my only concern was for my baby and he was healthy so that was all that mattered. I would worry about my extra weight after he was born.

My doctor told me that salt was my enemy and that I needed to cut it out of my diet.

At that point I was looking at everything I ate. You don’t realize how much salt is in everything until you go looking. I wasn’t a big salt eater to begin with, but I cut back everywhere I could and was still managing to gain weight. My doctor still continued to say it was the salt.

Come to find out my body was retaining fluid. You could push on my feet or legs and the print would stay- I had pitting edema.

My husband was having to help me put my shoes on and move around. I couldn’t bend my legs and it hurt to do just about anything. I was worried about my skin stretching so bad that I would get stretch marks from all the fluid.

My family didn’t recognize me. But my baby was healthy, that was what really mattered at the time.

Upon the birth of my son, I took to a mindset of juggling Motherhood and trying to get back to my normal self. After reading about how to stay healthy after giving birth this is how I was able to lose weight while breastfeeding.

How To Lose Weight While Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding takes a lot from the body, it does wonders for Mama and Baby. Seeing as breast milk is 80% water, it pulls everything it can from the body.

That’s where I started losing the weight.

I drank Mother’s Milk Herbal Tea and pumped to get my milk going. It started going so well that my body was sweating out the fluid in my sleep.

I would wake up drenched and having to change my clothes.

Drink Plenty of Water

In order to flush the body you have to drink lots of water. It also helps with milk letdown.

I keep a large bottle with me at all times.

Keeping Mama hydrated keeps Baby hydrated as well.

Eat healthy

You have to take care of yourself while taking care of Baby. Don’t neglect yourself.

Fruits and Vegetables are amazing things to snack on instead of sugary snacks. You’re home the first 6 weeks so put a bag of Halo’s or Cuties on the table and grab them as you need them.

Throw some lemon in your water and eat some strawberries with your lunch.

Keep Moving

Move your body!

Now that doesn’t mean go to the gym or get to walking. Although walking helps, you have a newborn and you just gave birth, sit down.

What I mean is, instead of rocking that baby in a glider or rocking chair, move your arms. Sit on the couch, put your legs up and gently move your legs.

Twist your body a little bit. Babies like movement so use your body.

It will soothe baby as well as use your muscles, don’t be afraid to get creative. As long as you’re moving, you’re making progress.

Get Creative

Being a Mom is hard enough as it is, we’re not going to have time to set aside for working out. However, you can get creative with the usual house hold chores.

Instead of getting all of the clothes out of the dryer and folding them on the couch as you watch TV, do squats! Squat with each piece of clothing you pull out of the dryer to fold.

While doing anything you can clench your stomach muscles and with every breath tighten your muscles, imagine your belly button pulling towards your spine- you can do this while driving, sitting, standing, anywhere. It will help tone those muscles.
